"Why book MarBella Elix hotel in Greece? For its other-worldly look-out over Paxos, Antipaxos, Corfu and the glistening Ionian from its hill-top location, as well as the smart, earthy-chic rooms and the beach cove just below. Set the scene Depending on your route, the journey to and from Marbella Elix is as unforgettable as the destination. If you possibly can, fly into Corfu, then take the hotelâs boat across the ocean to your final stop. Youâll feel entirely reset and ready to holiday by the time you arrive, having passed countless secret sandy shores, caves and inlets on your way, sea salt amassing to shimmer in your hair. Elixâs reception is then like a sort of celestial spa, with barn-high ceilings and windows that frame the infinity view, and even a soothing spa-like scent to cascade over your senses. The crowd here is very family-focussed, with a high number of Brits (we did visit during the UKâs summer school holidays), as well as French and German visitors. Colourful tapestries hang throughout, infusing the place with local artisanal history, complementing the overall sunshiny modern-luxe feel. The backstory MarBella Elix is the third in the MarBella trilogy (the hotel brandâs name translates to âbeautiful seaâ in Italian â and you pronounce the llâs): the original outpost opened in a fishing village on Corfu in the late Sixties, realising the dream of founder Vassilis Dracopoulos senior. After relinquishing control in the Seventies, the Dracopoulos family then reclaimed MarBella Corfu at the turn of the century, leading to the opening of the adultsâ-only MarBella Nido on the same island in 2018, and now MarBella Elix just across the sea on the Greek mainland in 2021. The rooms Rooms are equally beachy and smart; soothing oases of earthy pine floors, statement woven-wood headboards, low-hanging bronze lamps and clear balconies that maximise your view out to carefully coordinated flowers and grasses, lines of balcony pools and endless waters. The food and drink From the very popular Greek and Mediterranean buffet served at long and large all-day restaurant Saffron, to the even more creative Greek fine dining and wining at the stylishly romantic Pearl, the food and drink at MarBella Elix is uniformly local and delicious. When youâre in need of a snack while in your swimwear, the Italian Indigo Pool Restaurant is on-hand with light bites and salads through the day or a dressier trattoria menu come sunset, while stylish, easy-breezy Azure down on the beach serves cool cocktails and excellent chicken skewers and antioxidant salads alongside its upscale burgers and pizzas (plus a fridge full of irresistible ice creams). All the places to eat at MarBella Elix benefit from phenomenal views out over the ocean and nearby islands, serving as an unparalleled side for any dish. The spa A bijou little space with wonderfully welcoming staff, the spa here is a great hideaway to dive into for a quick massage or pamper. The neighbourhood Although its most central charm is the fact that itâs so uniquely isolated, as though on a pedestal looking out over the worldâs most beautiful topography, the hotel offers dozens of opportunities to explore the local area, including being chauffeured to try local dishes at a taverna in a nearby small village â a rather fairytale experience (we recommend the Moussaka, obviously). Turning your screens off and getting outside to feel the sun on your face in Parga, the local area, is keenly catered for (though certainly not enforced), with available activities ranging from kayaking into hidden bays and mountain and coastal biking, to al-fresco yoga sessions, sailing courses and snorkelling around underwater meadows. The service Professional, patient and helpful throughout â even during the extreme Greek heatwave of August 2021. For families Parents can feel very supported here, with its creche and new Grasshoppersâ Mini Club providing childcare from four months to 12 years, as well as lots of experiences on offer for restless teens (see The neighbourhood section, above) and a reliable evening babysitting service for an extra fee. The indoor and outdoor activities range from water fun and treasure hunts to sports championships and theatre shows, and a London creative events company even organises the likes of stargazing and Greek mythology games during summer. The little kidsâ pool is shaded and heated though quite small, while the much larger main heated infinity pool has a long overspill âmoatâ which is great for smaller kids to paddle about in. There are nine special family rooms to choose from, some two-storey or with show-stopping panorama pools, as well as plenty of interconnecting room options. Our only tiny quibble? That the restaurants donât start serving food until a slightly less child-friendly 6.30pm or 7pm â although perhaps that just helps us all get into the later Mediterranean lifestyle even more. And the number one thing that your children are likely to remember forever from MarBella Elix? The funicular ride up and down to the beach, which is pretty special in itself. Eco effort As well as maintaining Blue Flag status for its beaches, the hotel group has been awarded a Green Key: an international award in recognition of having a âgreenâ attitude to tourism. Some of its marine areas are also safeguarded under Natura 2000, a European Ecological Network which protects habitats with rare species or areas of special natural beauty. Inside, the hotel manages its food waste as closely as possible, donating leftovers to local communities, and is closely focussed on achieving diversity in the workplace. Anything left to mention? Donât leave the translucent screen open to your balcony â itâs there for a reason. The cicadas here are immense (and pretty harmless and really exotically beautiful â but still, not something you want to share your bed with). Theyâre also further proof that youâre really in the authentic Greek countryside now."
