"With Texan Yao Lu at the helm, this neighbourhood joint is a fixture of the Shanghai bar scene with a hearty helping of American hospitality. Lu is known for his bar education, whether online or traveling around China to deliver seminars on topics ranging from mental health to step-by-step guides, as well as his Rolodex of unique cocktails, which update regularly at Union. Southern hospitality is in the bones of this bar, with American comfort food, warm woods and modest decor making it a cosy spot to park up at the bar or strap in for a long and raucous night. You might find yourself with a long drink made of local ingredients, such as baijiu with jasmine coconut water tea and peach bitters, or sipping on something heartier from the bar’s barrel-aged cocktail programme."
