"UNESCO World Heritage Nestled away in the north of Norway, just above the Arctic Circle, is an extraordinary series of rock carvings that date from as early as 4200 B..E. to around 500 B.C.E. They are part of a large archeological site close to the town of Alta and have survived in remarkable form, given the levels of pollution from industrialization. The wide variety of imagery used in the carvings suggests a culture of hunter-gatherers who are thought to be descendants of the Komsa, a Stone Age society that developed along the Norwegian coast and increased in number during the late Ice Age. Through their work, the hunter-gatherers who made the Alta carvings have provided us with a great deal of information about their lives. The people who made these carvings were hunters and fishermen, adept at herding animals and building boats. Images of reindeer feature regularly in the carvings, as do those of elk, birds, fish, wolves, bears, and many other species. It is noticeable that bears feature prominently in many of the carvings, often posed in positions that suggest that they were worshipped. Several ancient cultures are thought to have had bear cults and shamanistic rituals. The history and importance of the Alta carvings is illustrated beautifully throughout the open-air museum constructed around the rocks. A 1.8-mile (3-km) wooden gangway built between the rock carvings makes them immediately accessible, and an exhibition displays photographic documentation of the images. In addition, there is an impressive display of objects that have been found in the area surrounding Alta, an exhibition on Sámi culture (thought to be likely descendants of the Komsa people), and an exhibit about the aurora borealis (the spectacular Northern lights). The Alta carvinas give us a glimpse of what life was like in this region many thousands years ago"
