The appeal is exactly what it describes: vast desert space, rugged mountain scenery, Rio Grande canyons, and true isolation. The NPS describes Big Bend as a place where “night skies are dark as coal” and rivers carve limestone canyons, with a solitary mountain range surrounded by Chihuahuan Desert. The history note is also basically right: Big Bend was established as a national park on June 12, 1944, after earlier state and local conservation efforts to protect the region. Why it’s worth considering Big Bend is one of the best national parks for someone who wants a real escape, not a crowded national-park circuit. It combines several very different experiences in one park: desert drives, mountain hikes, hot springs, river canyons, borderland history, and stargazing. The night-sky claim is a major reason to go. Big Bend was awarded International Dark Sky Park status in 2012, and the NPS says its Natural Sounds and Night Skies division determined Big Bend has the darkest night skies of any national park in the lower 48. The broader Greater Big Bend region is also part of the world’s largest certified dark-sky reserve. The Chisos Basin area has had major infrastructure/water-system issues and planned improvement projects. NPS says Big Bend remains open, but project-related impacts can affect Chisos Basin access, lodging, campground, restaurants, visitor services, and nearby trail access depending on timing. Best time to go I would avoid summer unless you are very heat-tolerant. The better windows are: Best overall: February–April and October–November Good for stargazing: New-moon periods, especially in fall/winter Avoid if possible: June–August, due to heat and long distances between services Fit for you Big Bend is very appealing, but it is not a casual “wing it” park. It is remote, huge, and services are limited. For your style, I’d do it as a 6–8 day road trip with real lodging reservations, lots of water, conservative hiking plans, and a focus on scenic drives and short-to-moderate walks. From Colorado, I’d pair it with Carlsbad Caverns, Guadalupe Mountains viewpoints, Marfa/Alpine, Fort Davis, and Big Bend Ranch State Park/FM 170 rather than driving straight there and back. "Pour y accéder, le visiteur est invité à emprunter le Ross Maxwell Drive. La route offre des paysages somptueux, donnant un avant- goût de ce à quoi ressemble le désert du Chihuahua. Sur cet axe routier, on lit des panneaux indiquant des ranchs. Y jeter un coup d'oeil permettra de plonger dans le passé du Big Bend. Au bout de Ross Maxwell Drive se dégage un petit chemin. Après quelques minutes de marche, on accède à l'entrée du canyon de Santa Elena. On peut aussi accéder au canyon par Old Maverick Road, si l'on vient de Study Butte. Santa Elena, avec son silence, ses parois verticales, les couleurs qui s'y projettent, est l'un des points les plus majestueux de la réserve. On peut s'y avancer un peu, en grimpant les marches de pierre, pour jouer avec l'écho. Au pied du canyon coule le Rio Grande, vous êtes aux Etats-Unis, sur l'autre rive, c'est le Mexique."

Les façades minérales des canyons creusés par le rio grande délimitent les USA et le Mexique, et les sentiers de randonnées jalonnés de yuccas finissent d'en faire un décor parfait de western. On y campe sous un ciel d'étoiles si vives qu'on a la sensation d'être en orbite. La répétition aléatoire des astres fait écho à la démesure du projet de Judd, et, dans le calme immense, on est imprégnés par la justesse de cette vaste conversation entre un paysage exceptionnel et des hommes vivionnaires dans le haut désert du nouveau mexique de l'ouest texan."
