"Best New in DC I want people to feel like they’re not in D.C.,” says chef Michael Rafidi of the latest gem in his jewel box, a collection that includes fine dining Albi and multiple vibrant Yellow cafes. Done! To locate La’ Shukran, in a tucked-away part of the Union Market district, diners listen for Middle Eastern tunes piped to the outside world, then ascend hypnotic, mountain-steep stairs accompanied by sounds that transport you to a faraway market. The name, which translates from Arabic into “No, thank you,” plays along, although my reaction to the food and drinks in the second-floor oasis is always “More, please.” More herb-packed, cheese-centered falafel, each orb sparkling with trout roe. More poached snails, flavored with arak butter and arranged on creamy hummus. More crisp sweetbreads, sweet and sour with apricot honey and lime zest. Rafidi didn’t want to compete with the pita he offers at Yellow, so the open kitchen sends out equally delicious baguettes and batards in what’s meant to be a Middle Eastern bistro incorporating French techniques, but “not too serious,” Rafidi says. Unlike the cocktails, which are seriously delicious companions to his finger food for the gods. The illustrated drinks list is a little work of art. Zanjabeel, one hit among many, blends scotch, ginger, pineapple (thirsty yet?), vanilla and za’atar. The way the sommelier talks about what he’s pouring into your glass makes the wine come alive. Concrete floors don’t help with the noise, which can be deafening. But slender Sabre knives feel good in one’s hands, a band of mirrors means everyone gets a view, and the fetching green-and-pink space with fringed overhead lamps makes for a beautiful wrap. A fan of the place told me, “I don’t really need a vacation, not when there’s La’ Shukran.” So true. When I need a break — from the routine, from the news — smoky fried rice with warm-spiced lamb and pickled apricots is just the ticket."
