"Extravagant brainchild of Governor Nelson Rockefeller. An enormous marble platform sitting atop a hill, the plaza covers 98.5 acres and includes 10 buildings, among them the Legislative Building, Justice Building, and the Egg—a round, whimsical performing arts center. A long reflecting pool cuts a ribbon through the main part of the plaza, which is also a destination for art lovers. More than 90 abstract expressionist works, including sculptures by Alexander Calder and Isamu Noguchi, can be found on the plaza and in its buildings. Legend has it Rockefeller conceived of the plaza during a 1959 visit from Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands: It humiliated him to drive royalty through the moldering capital. The plaza cost at least $1 billion—an extraordinary sum for the time—and displaced 3,600 households, many of them poor. The ambitious project generated great controversy, but the plaza has been largely responsible for the rejuvenation of Albany’s downtown."
