"The exotic city of Dhaka, capital of Bangladesh, was officially founded in 1608 as the seat of the imperial Mughal viceroy of Bengal. It grew along the banks of the Buriganga River, which led to a rapid growth in Dhaka's trading and commercial interests. At its heart is the Pink Palace (Ahsam Manzil), the gardens of which slope down to the waters of the Buriganga. The Pink Palace is one of the most magnificent buildings in the capital. Businessman Khwaja Alimullah bought it from the French Trading House in 1830 and turned it into his home. His son Khwaja Abdul Ghani completely rebuilt it between 1859 and 1872 to create its present palatial appearance. Abdul Ghani was a brilliant strategist and philanthropist who after supporting the British Raj during the Sepoy Uprising of 1857, was made an honorary magistrate In 1875 he was created Nawab (leader) of Dhaka, a title that was later made hereditary. The Pink Palace became central to political activity through the Nawab' reign and it was from here that Muslim leadership of East Bengal emerged and the All India Muslim League was founded in 1906, In 1952, after the East Bengal Estate Acquisition Act. the fortunes of the Nawab and the palace turned and the building fell into near ruin. In 1985 the Bangladesh government began restoration work and the former palace was turned into a museum with twenty-three galleries displaying artifacts from the time of the Nawabs."
