"Comacchio (Emilia-Romagna), Venice’s obscure little sister On a network of canals and islets, Comacchio can be explored on foot or aboard a batana, traditional flat-bottomed boats. This ancient fishing town stretches along the marshes of the Po delta, halfway between Ravenna and Ferrara. Water is everywhere here, lining the ochre facades, crossing the squares, flowing under the bridges and extending as far as the brackish lagoons of the neighbouring regional park. Cross the Trepponti, a 17th century five-arched bridge built at the junction of several canals to regulate the passage of goods. Nearby, in the former Ospedale degli Infermi, now a museum, there is Roman shipwreck, a remnant of the city’s seatrading past, which was already well established two millennia ago. All around it, narrow cobbled streets, closed shutters and hanging laundry create a theatrical setting with no stage direction."
