"Chicago Botanic Garden is less a garden and more a network of islands stitched together by bridges, which is what makes the walking so exceptional. The layout naturally creates long, non-repeating routes as you move between distinct zones—Japanese Garden, English Walled Garden, prairie, wetlands, and lakes. It feels expansive in the way a great park does, not like a curated loop you’ve seen before. The scale—385 acres—puts it in the same category as a small nature preserve rather than a typical botanical garden. You can design walks that feel like continuous exploration rather than backtracking. The water features and open sightlines keep it from feeling enclosed or repetitive. It’s also unusually flat and well-maintained, so you can comfortably do long distances without fatigue from terrain. Compared to something like Central Park, it’s less urban and more serene, but similar in terms of distance potential."
