"Many tourists end up spending way too much of their holidays at Cape Town's V&A Waterfront precinct, in all the wrong placesâcongregating at the mega-mall, luxury hotels, or at any number of cookie-cutter chain restaurants. But where they should be spending their time (and money) in this district is at the Watershed, a cavernous design and crafts market that houses dozens of stalls by local South African artisans, from fashion to housewares and beyond. For those in a rush, it's a great place to buy all your souvenirs and gifts for friends and family back home in one stop; for those with more time to spare, take a leisurely stroll through the warren of stalls to discover up-and-coming South African designers you can't leave Cape Town without supporting. Excellent! So what will we find here? You'll find all the classic giftable items you've been seeing all over town, but at much higher qualityâthink woven baskets, beaded toy animals, and traditional fabrics. But you'll also find more contemporary designs too, like funky baseball caps made with leather and shweshwe fabric from JK Millinery, handmade kitchen towels and dish covers with modern protea prints from Spaza Store, and dresses and skirts in local textiles from Patricia Nama. You also can't miss a small outpost of cult Cape Town boutique Mungo & Jemima. Say we're looking to splurge a littleâwhat should we look for? Anything or everything from Pichulik, a beloved local accessories brand that specializes in funky earrings and necklaces fashioned from thick coils of rope along with glass and stones. Alternately, is there anything for those on more of a budget? A colorful stuffed lion or rhino made with mismatched local fabrics from Shongololo Toys. Who might we find perusing the the Watershed? There will be plenty of tourists who have wandered over from the main V&A Waterfront area and are busily scooping up all kinds of souvenirs and gifts, but fashion-savvy locals also love the one-stop-shop convenience of finding a lot of their favorite brands and discovering new ones under one roof. Do you have any recommendations for particular stalls or booths to hit? It's pretty easy to navigate and explore each booth at a good pace, but make sure you go all the way to the mini-boutiques at the two main entrances, tooâthe Mungo & Jemima outpost is a favorite, as are housewares stores Odeon (curated by the couple responsible for the market, Trevyn and Julian McGowan of the Guild Group) and Africa Nova, which carries ceramics and other showpieces from across the continent."

"V&A waterfront is very safe to stay at night. A lot of restaurant options for seafood. Stores open until 9pm. The mall is just a mall đ I pinned the area on the mall for convenience. A lot of attractions and tout options around."
