"Sitting between two pretty lakes in the forested Lilla Luleälven valley, just north of the Arctic Circle, compact Jokkmokk (meaning ‘river bend’ in Sámi) is Lappland’s undisputed capital of Sámi culture and the region’s biggest handicraft center. Its Sámernas Folkhögskola is the only further-education college in the country that teaches reindeer husbandry, craft making, and ecology in the Sámi language. A Sámi meeting place for centuries, Jokkmokk acquired a more permanent feel in the 17th century with the establishment of a church, and its annual winter market in February attracts tens of thousands of Sámi and non-Sámi visitors. Jokkmokk’s charms include the definitive museum of Sámi culture, numerous handicraft shops, and its proximity to the Sarek, Padjelanta, Muddus, and Stora Sjöfallet national parks that are part of the Laponia World Heritage Area. This makes it a great jumping-off point for outdoor adventure. Jokkmokk Winter Market Apart from great shopping and street theatre, this huge market also features reindeer races. Further north, Arvidsjaur is particularly popular with stunt drivers in winter, while Jokkmokk is the Sámi capital of Lappland. Gällivare (Váhtjer in Sámi), Inlandsbanan’s northernmost stop, and Malmberget are mining towns. Malmberget is home to the second-largest LKAB iron-ore mine in Sweden, where visitors may marvel at the mammoth-sized trucks laboring in its subterranean depths or visit the open-pit Boliden Aitik copper and gold mine."
