"UNESCO World Heritage Old Goa, the original capital of the former Portuguese colony of Goa, once rivaled Lisbon in size and splendor, though it is now little more than a village. It was the first Christian colony in the Indies and in 1565 could boast a healthy population of 200,000. However. malaria and cholera epidemics ravaged the city in the seventeenth century and it was then largely abandoned, so that by 1775 the population had fallen to a mere 1,500 The huge Church of Bor lesus (Good Jesus) is also known as the Church of St. Francis Xavier because the saint, who was based in Goa from 1542, is buried here. Erected in 1594 and consecrated in 1605, the church is a superb example of Renaissance Baroque architecture in India Cruciform in plan, it combines lonic, Doric. Corinthian, and composite styles. Three elegant entrances are surmounted by three large rectangular windows, then three smaller circular windows, culminating in a richly carved central gable. The chapel and tomb of St. Francis Xavier--a pupil of St. Ignatius Loyola, founder of the Jesuits- lie on the south side of the transept The ornate tomb was a gift from Grand Duke Cosimo Ill of Tuscany Carved by Giovanni Battista Foggini, it took ten years to complete and was erected in 1698. The silver casket containing St. Francis's remains is a magnificent hybrid of Italian and Indian art. When the saint's body was transferred here a year after his death it was said to be as fresh as the day it was buried" St. Francis is credited with miraculous healing powers, and his body is displayed to the faithful on the anniversary of his death, December 2 every ten wears (next due in 2014), attracting pilgrims from far and wide The Church of Bom Jesus is just one of the group of "Churches and Convents of Goa listed as a World Heritage site in 1986."
