"This is clean, alpine living at its most glamorous. Sitting above the clouds overlooking Switzerland’s Lake Lucerne, Bürgenstock has distilled this sense of calm for its new hydrothermal wonderland – an impressively expansive multi-storey space dedicated to “health through water” (the Latin origin of the term “spa”) – as well as a spacious, dedicated Beauty Lounge. Set the scene Once home to Audrey Hepburn and Sofia Loren (Hepburn even got married in its mountain-top chapel, which you can still visit), the grand Bürgenstock is storied, to say the least. Part Wes Anderson in its symmetrical grandeur and red funicular approach, part Slim Aarons with its mid-century leisure aesthetic and curved pool (which hosted fashion shows in the 60s), this really is the stuff legends are made from (and we haven’t even mentioned the fact that Goldfinger was filmed here). The backstory When it opened in 1873, Bürgenstock was arguably Europe’s first resort hotel, specialising in wellness before the buzzword. After falling behind the times towards the end of the 20th century, it was given a seriously considered makeover (to the tune of a reported $560 million) by the Qatari State Fund – the same purse strings behind London’s Savoy and similarly decorated wellness centre Chiva Som. It reopened in 2017 with a staggering 107,000-square-foot spa – one of the largest on the continent. The rooms Sleek and minimal rooms within The Contemporary (the hotel which connects directly to the spa) are a masterclass in understated luxury, with brown marble sinks and minimal wood panel dividing walls. The focus is on the view, with sofa-to-ceiling windows and a panel allowing fresh air to circulate. Beds are plush, wardrobes are spacious, and robes are impossibly soft. The highlight is the jacuzzi-sized bathtub, with an uninterrupted view of the lake with its mountain-lined horizon and an encased log-burning fireplace between the tub and the living area. Food and drink There are numerous restaurants and bars dotted throughout the resort, but the main dining room is Spices, which serves as the breakfast room in the morning and moonlights as an Asian restaurant come nightfall. The dining room juts out of the hotel like a floating veranda, giving a 360 view of the valley, which is particularly spectacular in the morning before the veil of fog has risen beyond the mountains. The breakfast menu includes a high-tea style selection of the best of the area, with fresh bread, charcuterie, fruit, local butter and a selection of cheeses made by the cows whose bells you’ll hear throughout your stay. Come evening, there’s a chef’s menu that guides you through Japan, India, Thailand and China for a pan-Asian tasting journey. Pair with sake or allow the sommelier to recommend some local wines. If there was any concern that you’d only be fed celery and green juice, think again – there are burgers at Lakeview Lounge and grilled lobster at the Oak Grill, as well as a wine cellar, which has a dining table for tastings and a woman-curated Cigar Lounge. The spa Understanding that the majority of guests wouldn’t be au fait with the intricacies of hydrothermal workings, the spa offers one of three “journeys” – dedicated sequences for experiencing the various saunas and steam rooms designed to either relax, rejuvenate or activate the body. Rejuvenate was the most extensive, so this is the option I tried, starting with a 10-minute swim in the indoor pool, including a non-prescription dip in the heated outdoor pool – complete with jacuzzi seating – then down the steps and into the main spa arena. My journey started with a Kneippe walk – stepping through a shallow pool with a pebble floor, mimicking a river bed, with both a cold and warm pool option to alternate between. Then, into the salt bath: a dark room with salted saline water within which the body floats. After an easy start, the next hour or so was alternating between hot sauna and steam rooms, and the various cold palette cleansers – an ice room, an indoor plunge pool and, the most extreme zone, the outdoor pool with Lucerne’s lake water (untreated), a truly icy and an experience undertaken naked. In fact, there is a dedicated nude wing of the spa, with naked steam and sauna rooms, including iterations where honey and salt scrubs are provided. Ample modesty towels are available throughout, and there is a separate women-only area with the same spa offerings. There are recommended pit stops throughout the journey to rest, hydrate and take in the view over a green tea or bowl of almonds. The journey element is a great idea for those who want to make the most of a hydrothermal experience and to get into the Alpine wellness mentality. The treatments The newly unveiled Beauty Lounge is a spacious parlour for beauty treatments of all forms and needs, from massage rooms to a hair salon and areas for bespoke treatments and top-of-the-line machines and gadgets. Far from being tucked away, the space is a real destination, with large, light-filled rooms, each with epic landscape views. I had the Dr Burgener facial, an hour-long treatment using products from Swiss brands to cleanse, exfoliate, tone and moisturise, including masks and ample facial massage. My facialist also did some extraction and tidied my eyebrows while one of the sheet masks did its magic. By the end, my skin felt noticeably firmer and plumper, and my eye area looked more hydrated and healthier. I allowed all of the goodness to sink in over the next hour or so, but I really noticed the effects a few days later when my complexion looked more even, with a dewy quality. I also had the Spa Body treatment, a one-hour full body massage using oils from Amra skincare. There was nothing revolutionary to note, but it was certainly a thorough and polished operation, with time to relax at the end. The service Friendly and professional, the team wants you to make the most of your time here, so are eager to provide recommendations. The spa team, in particular, are all experts in their fields; the facialists are dedicated to facials alone, for example, so there’s a wealth of knowledge and attention to detail in everything the spa has to offer. For families The hotel is a great spot for families of all ages, with numerous daily activities and expansive restaurants with a variety of cuisines, as well as its limitless, safe mountain hillsides to explore. Older kids and teens can make the most of the tennis courts, golf course and cinema, and there is a children’s film matinee. The spa itself offers family hours (9am-noon; 5-7pm for under 16s) so parents can make the most of pool time with little ones before dropping them off at kids club and returning to some R&R – an ideal set-up for new parents and young families on a first holiday. There’s also a babysitting service, and the hotel can arrange day trips. Let’s talk about the kids club itself: it would be hard for any child not to enjoy this impressive play space, which has a jungle gym, a plush mediaeval Princess castle, a rainbow room with cots for toddlers to take naps, and a roster of crafting and game activities, all available free of charge for children aged 3 - 12 years old. Eco effort The hotel and spa has made various considerations to reduce waste and become more efficient. From using the natural lake water to cool the structure instead of using air conditioning to having metal containers to keep spa water warm overnight (so it doesn’t need reheating come morning), the team has numerous little inventions to maintain an environmentally conscious model. Accessibility The spa is wheelchair accessible throughout its sprawling, multi-storey setup. There are lifts at each level, and pools have lifts and hoists to help wheelchair users in and out. Likewise, consideration has been given to children with mobility issues and individuals with learning difficulties that affect movement, with trained staff able to facilitate access and enjoyment of the spa. There are disabled changing rooms and bathrooms, and the treatment rooms have beds that lower to 50cm off the floor to help with getting on and off. Anything else to mention? Bürgenstock is certainly a top-tier retreat with limitless potential. Though it is tempting to while away the hours within the nature-infused spa, don’t forget to enjoy nature itself. There are woodland trails, including an easy (ish) uphill stroll to the Hammetschwand Elevator – the highest exterior lift in Europe. Walking through the surrounding forest is a treat, with fresh air and complete silence, other than the dinging of cowbells in the distance. Fun fact: Audrey Hepburn used to forage for mushrooms here (foraging, as of yet, not part of its offering)."
