"The Hornstrandir is one of the most beautiful hikes in the country. For 4 or 5 days, you will have the impression of discovering distant, desolate and forgotten fjords; quite simply a magical and timeless journey that you will never forget! The most common route is that called the "Royal Horn" (Hornsleid) which allows you to admire all the essential views of the reserve. The main steps are as follows: Day 1. Take the boat from Ísafjörður to Veiðileysufjörður. Pass the pass to reach the Höfn camp in the Hornvik. Count between 4 and 8 hours. Day 2 Leave the day to admire the breathtaking cliff of Hornbjarg, over 500 m high, then come back to sleep at the campsite for a second night. Day 3. Get up early in the morning to cross the pass and reach Hlöðuvik. Allow around 6 hours. Day 4. Connect Hlöðuvik to Hesteyri via the Kjaransvíkurskarð pass and Hesteyrarbrunir. Allow around 8 hours. Abandoned in the last century, you will find a café in this village but also a small port where you can take your boat towards Ísafjörður. You can pitch your tent in the campsite if your ferry does not arrive until the next day and take the opportunity to visit the surroundings, including the remains of an old whale factory. Two-day course. It is quite possible, for the most in a hurry and the least athletic, to leave only to explore the Hornstrandir over two days. A classic route consists of simply joining Hornvik, spending a night or two there, then joining the Lonafjörður to take the return boat; this walk takes 6 to 7 hours. The West Tours and Borea agencies offer day trips in particular; inquire directly with them. Conversely, for the most motivated, it is quite possible to stay much longer in the reserve by taking even wilder paths. Ask at the tourist offices. Be careful, always plan your food. Finally, note that, along the coast, shelters are provided in case of emergency (equipped with radios). We strongly recommend that you find out about the weather conditions (July being the best time) before leaving, but also that you have a very good map, as recent as possible. A serious organization coupled with good adapted equipment are essential."
