"Borrowing notes from safari experts in Africa, this family-run cattle ranch deep inside the world's largest tropical wetland has pioneered big cat eco-tourism in South America, Just over 35 years ago, when conservationist Roberto Klabin was transforming part of his property into a high-end lodge, the Pantanal was widely dismissed as a remote farmland full of flies and angry pantaneiros hunting feline predators. But slowly the world has woken up to its charms: some of the continent's A-list animals are regularly spotted free-roaming where fences have been removed. This radical change is partly down to the vision of former Formula 1 driver Mario Haberfeld, whose Onçafari charity focuses on sensitively habituating jaguars to the sound of vehicles, increasing the likelihood of sightings from almost zero to nearly 100 per cent. Along with game drives in open-top safari-style vehicles, visitors have the opportunity to witness conservation in action by shadowing the team as they track collared creatures and monitor their behaviour for scientific research. But even from the 18-suite Casa Caiman or six-room Baiazinha private villa, it's possible to see a rainbow of macaw wings flashing through treetops and shy armadillos shuffling in the grass. At the heart of it all, heritage has not been forgotten: this is still a working farm. Guests can ride horseback as the sun sinks into amber-stained skies, and share grilled meats at an outdoor churrascaria. Using tourism as a tool to preserve wildlife and culture is Caiman's greatest success. SARAH MARSHALL caiman.com.br"

"More than 35 years ago, when conservationist and entrepreneur Roberto Klabin transformed part of his family’s farm into a high-end lodge, the Pantanal was widely dismissed for being full of flies—but that’s no longer the case. Things are changing in the world’s largest tropical wetland. By habituating jaguars to the sound of vehicle engines, NGO Onçafari has increased sightings of the threatened predators on the property. Go on a game drive, shadow conservation teams, and horse-ride through gallery forests in the (largely) fence-free grounds, while experiencing life on a working cattle ranch. South America’s answer to the Okavango Delta without any of the hype or the crowds."

"Dans un domaine de 53 000 ha, un vaste complexe hôtelier de luxe ultra confort (l'un des plus étendu du Pantanal), spécialisé dans l'écotourisme, formé de quatre établissements disséminés sur un large domaine privé. Selon la formule choisie, on passe de l'une à l'autre, en Jeep, à cheval, en bateau, etc. Presque à mi-chemin entre Corumbá et Campo Grande."
