"L'ensemble du temple de la Mahabodhi constitue l'un des quatre lieux saints associés à la vie du Bouddha, et notamment à son Éveil. Le premier temple a été érigé par l'empereur Asoka au IIIe siècle av. J.C., alors que le temple actuel date du Ve ou VIe siècle ap. J.-C. C'est l'un des plus anciens temples bouddhistes en Inde qui soit toujours debout, et l'un des rares temples de la fin de la période Gupta construits entièrement en briques !"

"UNESCO World Heritage Before the Buddha died, he summoned his disciples to remember the four important places where major events took place in his life Amang these places was Bodh Gaya. As with other religions, the topographical element has its place in Buddhism, Indeed, according to a specific time period and geographic coordinates, a site can become a pilgrimage center. This is the case for Bodh Gaya, believed to be where the Buddha Shakyamuni reached enlightenment in the seated position on the diamond throne, with his hands touching the earth beneath the Bo tree, or sacred fig. The worshipping of the tree is not exclusive to Buddhism: it has been a folk tradition since the Indus Valley civilization. Every consequent event in the Buddha's life occurred in the presence of a different type of tree. The diamond throne and a reconstitution of the sacred tree are found at Bodh Gaya at the west comer of the temple, Although the dating of the Mahabodhi temple is contested, it is believed that it was erected during the fifth or sixth century, In the nineteenth century the British had it rebuilt. The temple is oriented eastward in the direction of the rising sun. The original railing leading to the temple where pilgrims circumambulate is believed to date from the second-century Shunga dynasty. Initially, the decorations depicting the life of the Buddha were not in anthropomorphic form. Instead, Buddhist symbols such as the stupa, the wheel, the empty throne, or the royal umbrella were used to imply the dedication of the shrine to the Great Lord. Nonetheless, the emergence of the iconic period converted the reliefs into images of the Buddha in his human form and his incarnations were also portrayed. By the sixth century the multiplicity of the Buddha images enshrined in niches and mini stupas had grown tremendously."
