"The British landed on this beach at Compo Point in Westport for their raid on Danbury, Connecticut. After confronting the enemy in Ridgefield, Arnold did all he could to harass them as they marched back toward their ships. Fresh British troops and artillery occupied the hill (beyond the bathhouse in the first photo) to cover the reembarkation. Arnold rallied the militia to charge the hill, but the men were exhausted from 48 hours of marching and fighting, and were unable to take it. The British were able to regain their ships and return to New York."
