"Visit a Swedish Icon When it comes to Swedish brands, car manufacturer Volvo is rivalled only by IKEA when it comes to global reach. But unlike IKEA's omnipresent modern furnishings, you don't have to assemble your Volvo on a carpeted floor at home - the company thankfully takes care of that part of the business at their massive factory 13km west of Gothenburg. Intrigued? Then make the trip here to visit the excellent Volvo Museum. Messis Gabrielsson and Larson founded Volvo in 1924, and their first car, the ÖV4, was inexplicably an open-top affair - not the wisest design choice in Sweden's climate. But things quickly improved, and by the 1930s the company was churning out cars, trucks and buses at an impressive rate. The museum presents Volvo's productions chronologically, from the curvaceous limousines of the 1930s to the famously boxy models of the 1980s. Highlights include the original P1800 coupe that Roger Moore drove in the UK television series The Saint, an exhibit of Volvo's seatbelt patent, an American Volvo that racked up 5.4 million kilometres and outlived its owner, and a Viggen fighter jet equipped with a Volvo-made engine. There are lots of hefty buses, lorries and earth-moving equipment on display, too. As Sweden's best automotive museum, it's worth suffering the trip out into Gothenburg's industrial badlands for a visit. Fit-tingly, it is a bit tricky to reach if you don't have a car. First, take tram 5 or 10 to Eketrägatan, then switch to bus 32, alighting at Arendals Skans. Note that this bus does not run at weekends."

Depuis l'ouverture en 1995, la collection n'a cessé de s'enrichir pour mettre à l'honneur cette fierté nationale. Outre les pièces et oeuvres exposés dans le bâtiment, le musée a également constitué des archives complètes, composées de documents historiques et d'images, offrant une vue unique sur l'histoire de ce qui est devenu l'une des entreprises les plus prospères de Suède."
