F.A.Q.

We tried our best to create a super simple app, but if you still have questions, here's some answers!

To add a place in Mapstr you can:

  • Type the name or the address of this place
  • Add the place immediately near you by using the geolocation feature
  • Scan the printed address (in a magazine, on a card) of the place
  • Long press the map at the exact location you want to add this place
All theses features are accessible by using the big add button at the bottom of the screen

Once you’ve found the place you want to add, you can add as many tags as you want to describe it and organize your map, choosing in your tags list or creating new ones.
The only mandatory attributes of a place, are its name, address and at least one tag.

You can add a comment to the place (if you want to remember the source or any other type of information).

All other place attributes are automatically filled in by Mapstr. You can change them or add your own information, such as the phone number, the website, and your own pictures: click on the « more options » button at the bottom of the screen.

You can also choose to make a place private if you don’t want your friends to see it.

In Mapstr, you can add your very own places, even not-listed ones, such as your friends’ homes, a sightseeing point or any other place you can think of: select the « create a new place » option when adding the place.

Your places are organized by the tags you attributed to each one of them. You may use any tags you want, in order to create your personal organization.
To select which places are displayed on the map or in the list, use the tags filter on the left side of the screen. When two or more tags are selected, Mapstr will display the places which have at least one of those tags.

In the « list » display (which you can select on top of the screen), you can use the search bar to filter your places by keywords. Mapstr will then search through your places to find matches based on name, address, tags and comments of each place.

Mapstr is built with your privacy in mind: everything you add is private, or shared with your friends if you want to. But nothing is public.

When you invite friends to join your network in Mapstr, you give them access to your places and gain access to theirs, but they won’t be able to see the places you marked as private.
As a connection with someone on Mapstr is always mutual (there are no followers), you can always see who has access to your non-private places.

Again, nothing is public in Mapstr: your places, your custom places, your comments, the pictures your add, the information you change, are only visible to your Mapstr friends.

Each one of your places can be marked as private at any time so that not even your friends can view it.

When you add tags to a place, you can use existing ones or create new ones. If you want to change a tag's name or color, or even delete a tag, you just have to long press on that tag.
You can choose any name and any color you wish.

As you cannot have a place without at least one tag, you can’t delete a currently used tag. If you really want to remove that tag, you need to remove it from all places in the first hand.

The « long-press to edit tag » feature also works in the filter menu, on the left side of the screen. As this menu only shows the effectively used tags, you cannot delete any tag from here.

When you touch a place marker on the map, or tap on a place in the list, a small preview of that place will appear at the bottom of the screen.
To access more details, tap or drag up this preview, to reveal the full display.

If you’ve added a comment, or if Mapstr managed to get the opening hours, website and other data, it will be displayed in this screen.

To show the full day-by-day opening hours, you can tap the « currently open » or « currently closed » mention.
To access the picture gallery, you can tap on the place's photo, or directly slide from right to left. If Mapstr didn’t find any photo for that place, it display a satellite view of its location.

To get directions to a place, open the place's details and tap the « Go » button. A list of partner apps will appear, one for each route option (taxi, car, transit and walk), with estimated travel times (if available).
To change the displayed app, tap the option button on the top right corner of that display and select the app you want to use.

If you would like us to integrate a new directions app, let us know at hello@mapstr.com and we’ll do our best!

By adding a friend in Mapstr, you gain access to her/his map while allowing her/him to access yours.
A connection with someone in Mapstr is always mutual, so that you will always know who can view your map and non-private places.

To add a new friend, you can send them an invite via the friends menu (on the right side of the screen). Each user has a unique username, and you can invite a friend by typing his username in the search field. You can also type his email address if you don’t know his username or to invite him if he’s not using Mapstr yet. Your own username is shown in your account settings (tap your picture on top of the left menu) or when you try to add a friend.

You can invite any friend who is not using Mapstr yet by sending her/him an invite through Facebook or Message, or just by sharing your username.

If you want to remove one of your friends, long press on its name in the friends menu. Your friend will be removed from your list, and won’t be allowed to access your data anymore.

To share a place with someone, even if she/he’s not using Mapstr, select this place and use the « send » button to display the various sharing options. You’ll then be able to send this place by mail, message, Facebook, Whatsapp or any other messaging app you want.

Your friend will then receive a picture of the place (if available), with the name and address, and a link to access the place's details directly in Mapstr.

Mapstr lets you import places from other popular services such as Facebook, Instagram, Foursquare and Swarm, or though csv and kml files. You can extract places from your Contacts as well.

To import places, go in your account settings, then tap on the service you want to use, then connect to this service to authorize Mapstr to access and import your data.

To export your saved places from Google Maps, you first need to download your Maps data with Google Takeout (https://takeout.google.com/settings/takeout), then convert the .json file to csv via http://nearby.org.uk/convert-saved-places-csv.php. Mapstr will then be able to open this file and import your saved places. We’re working on a easier solution…

If you want to create your own csv file to import places into Mapstr, please use only real csv file (comma separated values), with ‘,’ delimiters and not ‘;’. Your file shouldn’t use any commas inside its values. The file should include at least a ‘name’ column and an ‘address’ column, and if possible a ‘lat’ and ‘lng’ columns. You can add a ‘comment’, ‘phone’, ‘website’ column if you want to.

If you want to keep a copy of your Mapstr data, you can export your places in a csv file (which can be opened by Microsoft Excel for example). This option is only available for iPhone at the moment.

To do so, plug your phone on your computer with iTunes, then open the iPhone tab, and go to the Apps section. Then scroll down to the bottom of the screen and click on Mapstr icon, and select the last version of your data to download it.

Your account lets you access your saved places from any device you want (iOS, Android or Web), retrieve your data when you replace your phone, and share your map with your friends.

You can access your account by clicking on your portrait picture at the top left corner of the filter menu (the left menu). Your account is also accessible through the app settings, then through the accounts menu.

To edit your account details (first name, last name, email and username), tap the edit button at the top right corner of the screen.
You can set your default privacy setting in your account: private or visible by your friends. Each new place will use this default privacy setting. If set on private, your friends won’t be allowed to see these places (but you can always change it manually).

Your account has a built-in backup feature, named « Time Machine », that saves an old version of your data, in case you accidentally delete some of your places.

Mapstr lets you connect more than one account at a time if you share your device or want to have a professional map to share with colleagues for example. To add another account, go to the app settings and in the accounts menu, then tap on « add an account » to connect to another account. You will then be able to change the active account by tapping on the one you want in the list.

If you want to permanently delete your account, contact us at hello@mapstr.com

If you’re connected with your email, and you don’t remember your password and want to reset it, type a wrong one in the login screen and try to login. A button will appear to let you send a password reset request.
If you confirm resetting your password, we will send you an email with a link to define a new password.

If resetting your password doesn’t work, make sure you didn’t connect with Facebook Login instead (in which case you don’t have a password and just need to connect via Facebook again).

If you have an issue with your account, such as a bad connection warning, issues accessing your friends’ maps or even your own places, it could come from a misrecognized account.

Try to disconnect then reconnect to your Mapstr account, to force a refresh of your data (don’t worry, you won’t loose anything by doing so).

If you still experience issues, don’t hesitate to contact us at hello@mapstr.com!
